Bjugan Takes 1-Meter Gold Medal

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – UNCW freshman Kolbein Bjugan open the Colonial Athletic Association in grand style, winning the men's 1-meter dive on Wednesday at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center.

The Seahawk men took the early lead backed by Bjugan's gold medal and a pair of top-three finishes in the 200 Medley and 800 Free Relays.

"The team got off to a great start tonight with our relays and men's diving," said UNCW Head Coach Jason Memont. "Hats off to Kolbein and the rest of the divers who competed extremely well for us and scored 68 points. They were absolutely fantastic in hitting their dives and I can't wait for them to get back at it Friday.

"The swimmers all showed up tonight and had fast swims. Our men are leading the meet right now, but each of the other teams are swimming extremely fast so we are going to have to show up tomorrow morning and keep the momentum going. On the women's side of things Evan Arsenault was strong for us on both relays and Faith Pilcher had the fastest fly split which bodes very well moving forward.

"There was so much energy on deck tonight and for us to be at our best that will need to continue."

Bjugan totaled 285.45 points and Brett Palo took third with 272.55 points.

On the women's side, William & Mary leads with the Seahawks in fifth.

The men's 200 Medley of Will Countie, Gianmichael D'Alessandro, Henderson Louviere and Sean Cannon took second with a time of 1:28.03.

In the session's final race, Jack Cosgrove, Avery Gambill, Aidan Snively and Mack Nesbit combined for a third-place time of 6:36.46.

UNCW finished fourth in the women's 200 Medley Relay and fifth in the 800 Free Relay.

The meet continues Thursday with the prelims at 11 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
