VCU Slips Past UNCW In Home Tennis Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Former Colonial Athletic Association rival VCU claimed the critical doubles point and added three singles victories to edge UNCW, 4-3, in the regular season men's tennis finale for both teams late Saturday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.

The Rams increased their record to 13-9 and snapped a two-match losing streak. VCU, 13-5 lifetime against UNCW, also improved to 4-0 against CAA opponents this spring.

The Seahawks concluded the regular season with a 10-10 mark. Saturday's match represented the final home appearance for seniors Josh Hublitz and Agustin Savarino.

Delayed twice due to showers in the area, the match finally got under way at 4:10 and finished when VCU's top singles player, Rayane Stable edged No. 125 Austin Hussey of UNCW, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, with darkness closing in.

Savarino pushed his career singles record to 38-29 and doubles mark to 34-23 with a pair of wins in his final home match. He teamed up with freshman Bruno Caula for a 6-4 verdict over VCU's Javier Amantegui and Stable at No. 2 doubles and then rallied back to defeat Arvid Noren, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

Caula (No. 3 singles) and Davide Innocenti (No. 6 singles) notched UNCW's other points in the match.
"Today was an emotional day for us as we said goodbye to two outstanding seniors," said UNCW Head Coach Mait Dubois. "We really appreciated the great crowd support and everyone who helped make this a special day.

"We've had so many absolute battles with VCU over the years and today was no exception. I'm really proud of how our guys fought and worked into a position to possibly win the match. It came down to a couple points in doubles and singles. We're going to focus on final preparations for the conference tournament and get everyone healthy and ready to go."

The Seahawks next defend their title in the CAA Men's Tennis Championships this week, scheduled for April 17-20 at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center.
