Women's Basketball Preview: Elon

ELON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team's first Colonial Athletic Association weekend road trip of the season comes to a close on Sunday afternoon when the Seahawks make their first visit to Elon's newly-built Schar Center for a 2 p.m. matinee against the two-time defending league champion Phoenix.

UNCW holds an 8-5 overall record and a 1-1 mark in league play after falling at William & Mary, 70-64, on Friday night. Redshirt senior guard Shrita Parker led the Seahawks with 20 points in the loss while junior guard Lacey Suggs and senior center Chinyere Bell each recorded a season high by scoring 17 and 14 points, respectively.
 
Parker leads the Seahawks and ranks third in the CAA with an 18.8 scoring average and has posted five games with 20 or more points. Redshirt junior guard GiGi Smith ranks eighth in the circuit by scoring 13.8 points per outing.
 
Elon has won two straight games and carries a 7-7 overall record with a 2-1 CAA mark after dispatching Charleston by a 76-68 count on Friday evening. Junior Lexi Mercer and sophomore Emily Maupin combined to score 37 points to pace the Phoenix.
 
Maupin leads the Phoenix and ranks 11th in the league in scoring with a 12.6 average while making 51.4 percent of her field goal attempts, which leads the CAA. Mercer, meanwhile, is averaging 11.8 points per contest, which is good for 12th in the CAA.
Sunday's Starting Five
Series Business – Elon leads the all-time series by an 11-6 margin and has won the last seven encounters against its in-state rival.    
 
Century Mark – UNCW redshirt senior guard Shrita Parker is expected to play in the 100th game of her college career on Sunday. She made 86 appearances at Rutgers before transferring to UNCW prior to last season.     
 
Ringing the Bell – Senior center Chinyere Bell has made 12-of-16 field goal attempts and 8-of-9 free throws over the last three games while averaging 10.7 points per outing.
 
Singled Out – Redshirt junior guard GiGi Smith was limited to a season-low four points on Friday night, snapping a streak of 12 consecutive double-digit efforts.    
 
On the Offensive – UNCW has grabbed 16.8 offensive rebounds per game in the last four outings, including 17 offensive boards in Friday's loss to William & Mary. 
Up Next: UNCW returns to Trask Coliseum next weekend to host a pair of CAA foes, welcoming James Madison on Friday night and Towson on Sunday afternoon.
