Rams Slip Past Seahawks In Men's Tennis

RICHMOND, Virginia – VCU rallied from an early deficit to slip past UNCW, 4-3, in a non-conference men's tennis match on Saturday at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
 
The Rams improved to 11-6 overall and 9-3 at home with the victory over their former Colonial Athletic Association rivals. VCU also moved to 2-1 against CAA opponents this season and 12-5 lifetime against UNCW.
 
The Seahawks had an eight-game winning streak snapped and stand 14-3 this spring. UNCW went 1-1 on a weekend road trip to Virginia to open a four-game road swing.
 
UNCW snagged the doubles point when sophomores Raphael Calzi and Ignasi de Rueda trimmed VCU's Javier Amategui and Vitor Lima, 6-3, at the top of the doubles lineup.
 
But the Rams won the first three singles matches off the court and then clinched the match behind Ignacio Crespo's 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, decision over UNCW's Michael Morphy at No. 5 singles.
 
De Rueda and Daniel Groom registered UNCW's singles triumphs. De Rueda outlasted Amategui, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles and Groom defeated Timo Zgraggen, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 6 position.
 
The Seahawks continue a four-match road swing on Friday, April 6, when Coach Mait DuBois and his club take on Georgia Southern in a 1 p.m. match in Statesboro, Ga.
