UNCW's Eldridge Makes Impact With Patriot All-America Appearance

1/26/2018 11:27:00 AM

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW senior Thomas Eldridge participated in the Patriot All-America for the second time in as many years, building upon his valuable experience gained as a junior.

The tournament, which originated in 2011 and featured 84 golfers from all levels of collegiate competition, was held Dec. 29-31 in Litchfield Park, Arizona.

"I was honored to be selected to play in this tournament for a second time," said Eldridge. "In a golf sense, it was a great opportunity to play against some of the best collegiate players in the country and to play for a spot in the Web.com tour. However, the real event is the fact that we get to play for and represent a fallen soldier. Once again, the opening ceremony was powerful. To hear the story of girl who lost her father when she was an infant, but being able to overcome it with the help of 'Folds of Honor' resonated with me.

"This year was also special because the wife of the soldier I represented contacted me and we spoke for 10 minutes or so. It was another great week and I'm thankful to be a part of it again."

Each golfer played in the honor of a soldier who was killed in action. Eldridge was paired with Major Larry Bauguess, Jr., a native of Moravia Falls, N.C., and based out of Fort Bragg.  He was honored as a Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient.

The tournament benefits the Folds of Honor, which provides scholarships and assistance to spouses and children of those killed or disabled in service to America. Following the championship, the player golf bags are shipped to their schools where they are auctioned off with proceeds going to Folds of Honor.

"It is an incredible honor for Thomas to have been selected two consecutive years to represent UNCW at the Patriot All-America Invitational as one of only 84 college golfers across the United States," said UNCW Interim Head Coach Daniel Bowden. "I believe this is a testament to Thomas' character, work ethic, and commitment to excellence in all he does. There is no greater honor than to represent your country, your university, yourself, and a fallen hero of our United States Armed Forces."

Those looking to bid on Thomas' PING golf bag are encouraged to contact the Seahawk Club at 910.962.2498 or seahawkclub@uncw.edu. The winning bidder will have their name embroidered on the front pocket.
