Fisher Nets First Place At Campbell Duals

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – Freshman Emme Fisher won her first collegiate race to highlight UNCW's finishes as the UNCW men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Campbell Duals late Friday at Keith Hills Golf Course.
 
The young Seahawks were scheduled to run in the 13th Annual Coastal Carolina Invitational before Hurricane Irma had other plans. In a late arrangement, the Camels staged Friday's race to give runners an early-season opportunity to compete.
 
In Friday's 4.2 K women's race, Campbell defeated UNCW, 27-30, but Fisher, a newcomer from Morehead City, N.C., crossed the finish line first with a time of 16:29. CU's Lize Botha came in second with a time of 16:38.
 
In the 4.2 K men's competition, the Camels topped UNCW, 15-49, and the Spartans defeated the Seahawks, 23-35. CU's Lawrence Kipkoech took first place with a 13:13.1 time. Senior Calvin Daughtry was UNCW's top finisher in eighth place at 14:16.

"It was a very challenging race for us," said UNCW Head Coach Layne Schwier. "We didn't have high expectations because 24 hours ago we didn't know we were coming here.

"The men's race was tough going up against a really good Campbell team. I had hoped to be competitive with UNC Greensboro, but we were a little off from them.
"In the women's race, I thought we did pretty well. We had a tight pack. Emme Fisher got her first collegiate win today and that was pretty exciting to see. She did that in high school, so it was good to see her do it again at the college level and hopefully that continues."

The Seahawks continue the new season next weekend by taking part in the Mountains to the Sea Duals in Boone, N.C., on Saturday, Sept. 16.
