ITA Recognizes Men's Tennis Team For Academic Excellence

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team has been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an All-Academic Team for the fifth consecutive season.

27642"I'm very proud of our team's performance in the classroom," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's 10th-year head coach. "It was one of the strongest team GPA's we've ever had, with more than half of the team posting a 3.50 average. Our team is very passionate about representing the university well and truly making the most out of the student-athlete experience. We had such a young team. For them to perform so well early in their academic careers says a lot about their character and their work ethic."

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any member program that has a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Overall, 720 teams and 3,908 student-athletes across all five divisions of college tennis were honored.

The Seahawks were one of just four squads from the Colonial Athletic Association recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team in 2016-17. Delaware, Hofstra and William & Mary also earned team honors.

A total of 302 NCAA Division I teams were honored by the ITA. UNCW was one of five North Carolina schools (UNCW, Duke, N.C. Central, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro) to collect the honor.

Individually, six Seahawks – Michael Copeland, Daniel Groom, Josh Hublitz, Michael Morphy, Agustin Savarino and Marshall Waren – were recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes. Hublitz, a junior from Vienna, Va., collected the award for the third straight straight year.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA is comprised of nearly 1,700 men's and women's coaches representing over 1,200 institutions across the country from all three NCAA Divisions, as well as NAIA and Junior and Community Colleges.
