Colonials Edge Seahawks In Men's Tennis, 4-3

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Visiting George Washington won the doubles point and added three singles victories to slip past UNCW, 4-3, in non-conference men's tennis action on Sunday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.

The Colonials improved to 13-5 with their fourth straight victory. The Seahawks had a three-match winning streak snapped and stand 10-5.

In Sunday's see-saw match, GW dropped the first doubles match off the court, but rallied for wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to claim the early point.

After GW won at No. 3 singles to increase its lead to 2-0, the Seahawks responded at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Freshman Ignasi de Rueda zipped past Christos Hadjigeorgiou, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles and newcomer Leon Back trimmed William Tutecky, 7-6 (3), 6-2, at the No. 6 slot to pull the Seahawks even at 2-all.

The Colonials grabbed the advantage again by winning the No. 5 singles match, but Seahawk sophomore Agustin Savarino defeated Chris Fletcher, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 2 singles to square the match at 3-3.

In the longest match of the day, GW's Julius Tverijonas outlasted UNCW's Andres Torres, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-4, at the top of the lineup to clinch the match for the Colonials.

The match was a special homecoming former Seahawk standout Rafael Aita, who ranks second on UNCW's all-time singles wins list with 64 career victories, who serves as an assistant coach for the Colonials.

Aita, who compiled a 64-18 singles record from 2010-14, also owns the best singles winning percentage in UNCW history after winning 78 percent of his matches.  He earned CAA Player-of-the-Year honors in 2013 and 2014.
