Hublitz Propels Seahawks To Third Straight Tennis Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Josh Hublitz clinched the match for the first time this season to help the UNCW men's tennis team pound former Colonial Athletic Association rival VCU, 4-1, early Saturday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks won their third straight match to bolt to 10-4 this spring, including 9-1 at home. The Rams of the Atlantic-10 Conference dipped to 10-9.

UNCW got off to a good start on Saturday by claiming the doubles point for just the fifth time in 14 matches. After the first two doubles teams off the court split matches, UNCW's No. 3 tandem of Andres Torres and Daniel Groom trimmed VCU's Philip Mobius and Louis Ishizaka, 6-4, for the critical point.

Freshman Ignasi de Rueda then hiked the score to 2-0 by outlasting VCU sophomore Vitor Lima at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, before Torres, playing at the top of the lineup, rallied from behind to knock off VCU's Daryl Monfils, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

VCU got on the board with a victory at No. 5 singles before Hublitz, from Vienna, Va., delivered the clincher at No. 3 singles with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, decision against Arvid Noren.

""Today was another battle against a team that we have had some great matches against over the years," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's 10th-year head coach. "We have a great rivalry with VCU from back when they were in the CAA and have always had a lot of respect for them.

"I'm very proud of our players for their willingness to fight as a team. We lost five first sets in the singles. Every singles match we won was in three sets. This team loves playing Seahawk-style tennis and I think it really showed today. They bring out the best in each other.

"Two of our captains really stepped up big today. Andres Torres and Josh Hublitz came through in a big way and are making strides every week. For Josh to clinch the match for us, I thought was the perfect way for the match to end."

The Seahawks are back on the courts tomorrow (Sunday, Apr. 2) when George Washington pays a visit for a 1 p.m. match. Former Seahawk standout Rafael Aita, who ranks second on UNCW's all-time singles wins list with 64 career victories, serves as an assistant coach for the Colonials.

Aita, who compiled a 64-18 singles record from 2010-14, also owns the best singles winning percentage in UNCW history after winning 78 percent of his matches.
