SUNSET, South Carolina – Junior
Lyberty Anderson carded a two-over-par 74 to lead UNCW during the opening round of the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee on Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who posted a 304 team score, finished the first day of the tournament in a tie for 14th place with Columbia. Furman surged out to the early lead and holds a three-stroke advantage over Michigan State after firing a three-under-par 285 team score.
"We were in a good position near the middle of the field until the last two holes," Coach
Cindy Ho said. "This is a very competitive field and we hung in there with many nationally-ranked teams. Our driving accuracy was excellent, but we struggled more with judging the winds and our approach shots."
Anderson finished Friday's action in a tie for 27th place after carding three birdies in the round, including a pair of birdies on the front nine holes.
Sophomore
Ellinoora Moisio follows in a tie for 42nd place after closing out play with a three-over-par 75 while junior
Alaina Yeatts posted a 77 to enter the second round with a share of 62nd place.
"Lyberty and Elli gave us good rounds and it was good to see Alaina post a solid round as well for the team," Coach Ho said.
Freshman
Thao My Nguyen is tied for 73rd place while junior
Kayla Thompson completes the Seahawks' contingent in a tie for 89th place.
The second round of the Clemson Invitational begins on Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
