Seahawks Finish Fourth at River Landing Classic

2017 River Landing Classic Final Results
WALLACE, North Carolina – Freshman Thao My Nguyen carded an even-par 72 to finish in a tie for ninth place as UNCW closed out play at the River Landing Classic in fourth place following the final round at the River Landing Golf Course on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who moved ahead by one spot from the opening day, carded an eight-over-par 296 to finish nine strokes ahead of Ohio. Penn State overcame a two-stroke deficit in the final round to earn the team title over East Tennessee State by seven strokes.

"Congratulations to both of our champions who led from start to finish," Head Coach Cindy Ho said. "Penn State, led by veteran coach Denise St. Pierre, played extremely well over the three rounds to take the team title. Hee Ying Loy of ETSU fired a personal best on Friday by setting a new tournament 18-hole record with a 65 to win her first college event.

"We were able to host an exceptional event with ECU this week," Ho continued. "The course was in excellent condition and we are so thankful to the River Landing staff, members and volunteers for their help in hosting a wonderful event."

Nguyen posted her best effort of the tournament on Friday, carding three birdies during the final round.

Sophomore Ellinoora Moisio shot a four-over-par 76 in the final round to earn a share of 11th place while junior Lyberty Anderson followed in a tie for 17th place after posting a 225 tournament score.

Junior Kayla Thompson earned a share of 23rd place after finishing with a 76 in the third round while junior Alaina Yeatts closed out the Seahawks' efforts with a five-over-par 77 for a tie of 42nd place.

"I am really proud of my team for how they played today to move up to fourth place," Coach Ho said. "We had struggled all year in windy conditions, but was focused today, made good decisions and kept grinding until the very end. We shot the second best score of the day and played the last six holes at even par, which made the difference.

"It was really good to see Thao My Nguyen have her first top-10 finish," the Seahawks' coach added. "She struck the ball exceptionally well all week and has been close to breaking through. Ellinoora had another strong and consistent performance for us. It was very positive for us to see all five scores until 77 in the windy conditions today."

The Seahawks will be idle until Mar. 24-26 when they compete at the LSU Tiger Classic.
