Aquahawks Power Past Visiting Monarchs


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW won 20 events, including a sweep of the diving events, to power past Old Dominion and win both meets in swimming and diving action on Saturday at the Seahawk Natatorium.

The sweep gave UNCW 1-1 records on both sides early this season. The Monarchs, meanwhile, fell to 0-2 on the women's side and 0-1 on the men's.

Junior Kyra Schemmel led the Seahawks with three event wins, taking the 200 Free (1:45.45), 500 Free (5:16.74) and 400 IM (4:31.48).

Freshman Faith Pilcher added wins in the 50 Free (24.16 seconds) and 100 Free (52.52). Pilcher also helped key wins on the 200 Medley and Free Relays.

Sophomore Sean Cannon gave UNCW a sweep of the freestyle sprint events, winning the 50 Free (20.94) and later touching the wall in a time of 45.98 to win the 100. Cannon also swam the anchor legs on the winning 200 Medley and Free Relays.

In diving, freshman Seth O'Dea picked up wins in the 1-meter (252.62) and 3-meter (291.90) boards while juniors Bri Urich (250.05) and Adyson Lowe (279.75) won the 1 and 3-meter events, respectively.

The Seahawks hit the road for the first time this season when they visit Catawba for a 2 p.m. start on Oct. 20.
