Mountains To Sea Duals Final Results

BOONE, North Carolina –
Junior Alex Boseman finished in third place and junior Karli Smiraglia came in 13th place to lead UNCW's runners in the inaugural Mountains To Sea Duals cross country race late Friday on the State Farm Fields and Kennedy Trails near the campus of host Appalachian State.

The Seahawk men finished fourth overall behind Appalachian State, Western Carolina and Miami. In dual scoring, UNCW lost to ASU (19-44), UofM (22-38) and WCU (23-38).

On the women's side, UNCW came in fourth with 80 points, trailing ASU, WCU and Miami. In dual scoring, the Seahawks fell to ASU (15-50) and WCU (24-32), and tied Miami (28-28).

Boseman covered the 6.4K course in 20:41 and finished behind winner Chris Anderson of ASU (20:37) and Miami's Sean Grossman (20:40). Smiraglia, meanwhile, finished the 5K layout in 19:08. ASU's Tristin Van Ord won the women's race in 17:55.

"The women's race went out really hard. We ran somewhat conservative and were able to move up throughout, but Appalachian was just too strong. Karli ran another strong race. I was very happy with Sarah Goodnight...she's asserting herself as our No. 3 runner. Kelsey Kiser also continues to make progress as she gains confidence.

"Alex was in the mix the whole race and just didn't have enough in the home stretch. We had a couple of guys get sucked out too fast early in the race and they paid for it later. Calvin Daughtry ran a solid second spot for us today."

The Seahawk teams will take two weeks off before returning to action on Oct. 9 when they get a look at the CAA Championship course at the Blue & Gold Invitational in Newark, Dela.
