No. 63 UNCW Rolls With 7-0 Blistering Of Colonials

Wilmington, North Carolina – The No. 63-ranked UNCW men's tennis team shook off an early rain shower by coming back strong to whitewash visiting George Washington, 7-0, in non-conference action on Saturday at the UNCW Courts.

The Seahawks won their third in a row to improve to 9-6 this season and stayed perfect with a 7-0 record on their home courts. The Colonials of the Atlantic-10 Conference fell to 9-8 and split a weekend trip to North Carolina after beating East Carolina late Friday.

UNCW plays its regular season home finale on Sunday at Noon vs. East Tennessee State. It marks the final home appearance for seniors Santtu Leskinen and Christiaan Van der Burgh.

In Saturday's action, the Seahawks started slowly and came back with a vengeance following a 20-minute rain delay. When it was all over, UNCW had swept every match on the court to win the third leg in a four-match homestand to conclude the home schedule.

"GW had beaten us the last two years and they have a very strong team," said ninth-year UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "I was very pleased to get the win today and feel like our team is making strides in a number of areas.

"We got off to an absolutely disastrous start by losing the first eight points of the doubles badly. The rain storm that came through was a huge break for us and we responded well after that."

The Seahawks won the doubles point when the No. 2 tandem of Leskinen and Taylor Cramer rallied from behind to edge GW's Fernando Sala and Chris Fletcher, 7-6 (5).

UNCW then won the first three matches off the court in singles and the rout was on. Van der Burgh set the tone with a 6-0, 6-3, romp over Danil Zelenkov at No. 2 singles and Josh Hublitz raced past Sala at the No. 6 slot, 6-1, 6-3, to increase the lead to 3-0.

Freshman Agustin Savarino then tacked on the clincher for the second straight match by downing Chris Reynolds at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-3.
