WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The finest collegiate runners in the region descend upon Charlottesville, Va., early Friday as the University of Virginia hosts the NCAA Southeast Cross Country Regional Championships.
UNCW, along with its counterparts from Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, challenges the 850-acre rolling grass hills of Panorama Farms with national implications on the line. Â
The women will run a 6K layout at 11 a.m. with the men to follow on a 10K course at noon.
"This will be the most competitive meet we will run in all season," said UNCW Head Cross Country Coach
Layne Schwier. "It is a tough course and one of the toughest regions in the nation."
Junior
Alex Boseman is coming off an All-Conference effort in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The Raleigh N.C., runner became the first back-to-back All-CAA runner from UNCW.
"Alex will try and break into the top 50 in this race," added Schwier. "It's great to finish the season almost completely healthy. Unlike last year, we will be able to take a full team to regionals."
Junior
Calvin Daughtry has been a key contributor for the Seahawks all season and hopes to continue that trend in Friday's race. "Calvin has had a great season for us and the longer 10K course will play to his strengths," added Schwier. "He doesn't like to start in front but picks off a lot of runners throughout the race."
On the women's side, junior
Karli Smiraglia will be out for a third straight race due to injury. She led the team in every race prior to being sidelined by injury.
Junior
Sarah Hamon has assumed the frontrunner spot in Smiraglia's absence. Hamon ran a team-best 24:45 6K in last year's regionals, which was also held at Panorama Farms.
Senior
Sarah Goodnight will run her last race as a Seahawk on Friday and wraps up her solid cross country career. A Salisbury, N.C., native, Goodnight has been a dependable contributor since her freshman season. She is making her 25th career appearance and has finished in the top three on the team in all but one outing this season.     Â
The top two teams on the men's and women's sides advance to the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. There are 13 team and 38 individual at-large bids up for grabs in Charlottesville.
N.C. State (women) and Virginia (men) are expected to be the favorites in the event.
