Boseman, Smiraglia Spark Seahawks To X-C Victories

NEWARK, Del. – Juniors Alex Boseman and Karli Smiraglia raced to individual titles as UNCW won both the men's and women's races early Saturday at Delaware's Blue & Gold Cross Country Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
 
Running on a challenging course that will serve as the site of the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Championships, the Seahawks dominated both races.
 
UNCW featured four of the top six scorers in the 8K men's competition, with Boseman, from Raleigh, N.C., enjoying a big gap over second-place finisher Mathew Nelson of Monmouth. Boseman posted a time of 27:00 to Nelson's 27:41 on the 8K course.
 
In the women's race, five of the top 10 scorers were Seahawks, and Smiraglia led the way. The junior from Laurel, Md., clocked a 23:33 over the 6K layout to finish ahead of Monmouth's Danielle Leavitt at 23:49 and teammate Sarah Hamon at 23:59.
 
"It was cool and a little damp, but conditions were good today," said UNCW Head Coach Layne Schwier. "It was tough, tough course and we're glad that we had an opportunity to see the course today. When we come back in three weeks, we'll be more mentally prepared.
 
"The course has a lot of ups and downs and the footing was pretty tough in a lot of spots. Hopefully, we learned a lot today that will help us in three weeks." 
The Seahawks tune up for the CAA meet next Friday with a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the Wake Forest Invitational.
