Men's Cross Country Joe Browning

Boseman, Hamon Lead Way At HPU's VertCross Invitational

VertCross Final Men's Results | VertCross Final Women's Results

KERNERSVILLE, North Carolina –
Juniors Alex Boseman and Sarah Hamon were the first UNCW runners to cross the finish line in Friday's VertCross Cross Country Invitational at Beeson Park.

The Seahawks came in 18th place out of 22 teams in the 8K men's race. George Mason won the men's competition with 64 points and Appalachian State's Chris Anderson topped the 234-man field with a time of 25:01.

Boseman, from Raleigh, N.C., clocked a 25:48 time for 27th place overall. Junior Calvin Daughtry was the second Seahawk to finish at 26:31.

"Alex was solid, but we were hoping for a bit faster today," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's head cross country coach. "He's in better shape than his result showed. Calvin had a great race after starting off way back and probably passed 150 runners during the race."

On the women's side, Duke won the team title with 70 points to edge Appalachian State by two points. Campbell's Joan Maritim claimed first place with a time of 20:41 on the 6K layout. Hamon came in 52nd out of 207 runners by running a 23:09 to help the Seahawks finish 14th out of 20 entries.

"Sarah ran a solid race as our frontrunner today," added Schwier. "She was a good 30 seconds or so faster than last year. Jessie Armstrong really stepped up for us today. She's relearning how to race and getting her running legs back after playing soccer last year."

The Seahawks next return to Newark, Del., for the CAA Championships on Oct. 29 before wrapping up the season at the NCAA Southeast Regionals in Charlottesville, Va.
