No. 74 UNCW Blanks ASU In Spring Tennis Opener

UNCW-ASU Match Results

WILMINGTON, North Carolina –
The No. 74-ranked UNCW men's tennis team kicked off its 2015-16 spring season in style with a 7-0 blanking of state rival Appalachian State on Saturday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks travel to Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend to take on North Florida, Miami and Alabama at UNF Tennis Complex.

"It was a good start to the season for us," said ninth-year UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "Our energy and intensity was good and I really liked the chemistry of our doubles teams.

"I was very impressed with Appalachian State's team and they really hung tough throughout the match. We got off to a good start and they did a good job of continuing to pressure us and seemed to play better as the match went on.

"We had to really work to close out the matches. We will get a lot out of this match. It highlighted some areas we need to improve. We look forward to some good practices before heading to Florida next week."

In Saturday's spring debut, the Seahawks swept a pair of doubles matches and then surrendered just one set – at No. 1 singles – to breeze past the Mountaineers.

Gianlucca Massa and Santtu Leskinen routed ASU's Jan-Willem Kleyhans and Alex Brea, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles and UNCW's No. 2 tandem of Aviv Ben Shabat and Christiaan Van der Burgh clinched the early point with an identical result over Zach Bost and Trey Morris.

Sophomore Javier Restrepo gave UNCW a 2-0 lead by pounding Kleyhans, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles and sophomore Xander Veys trimmed Bost, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 4 position to hike the score to 3-0.

Van der Burgh, one of two seniors on the squad, then provided the match clincher by beating Jack Maddocks, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
The Mountaineers picked up their lone set victory at the top of the lineup, but Leskinen outlasted Oliver Casey, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to preserve the shutout.
