USTFCCCA Recognizes Cross Country Teams For Academic Work

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's and women's cross country teams have been recognized once again by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as All-Academic Teams for the 2014 season.

The Seahawks were among 226 women's teams and 179 men's teams to compile at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and start at least five runners at the NCAA Regionals.

"This is something we strive for each year," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's distance coach. "It used to be part of our team goals each year, but it has become an expectation. Like most student-athletes, our runners take their studies very seriously.

"Our runners understand why they are at UNCW. We're proud of both teams for continuing to be committed on and off the field. We're especially proud of the women's program for keeping its streak going strong."

The Seahawk women posted a 3.36 grade point average and were one of 12 North Carolina schools on the list: Appalachian State, Davidson, East Carolina, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, UNCW, North Carolina State, UNC Asheville, UNC Chapel Hill, Wake Forest and Western Carolina. Seven CAA teams were honored: Delaware, Elon, James Madison, Northeastern, UNCW, Towson and William & Mary.

The men's team, meanwhile, earned a 3.20 GPA and was one of seven state institutions recognized: Davidson, Elon, North Carolina State, UNC Chapel Hill, UNCW, Wake Forest and Western Carolina.  Elon and Northeastern were the only other CAA schools to share the honor with UNCW.
