WILMINGTON, North Carolina – After suffering their first Colonial Athletic Association loss of the season on Tuesday night, the Seahawks continue a grueling stretch of four games in eight days on Friday by hosting the College of Charleston at Trask Coliseum. Opening tip-off between the Seahawks and the Cougars is slated for 11:30 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Seahawk Digital Network with Joe Catenacci providing the play-by-play.
LAST TIME OUT FOR UNCW: Senior guard Kelva Atkins scored 18 points and sophomore guard Brie Mobley added 14 points off the bench, but the Seahawks were unable to get past a strong start from defending CAA champion James Madison in a 74-57 defeat at the JMU Convocation Center on Tuesday night. Atkins made six of nine shots from the floor, including both of her attempts from three-point range, while Mobley scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.
SCOUTING CHARLESTON: Currently 3-10 overall and 1-1 in the CAA, the Cougars rallied from a seven-point second half deficit to defeat Delaware by a 55-49 margin at TD Arena on Tuesday night. The Cougars, who have posted all three of their wins at home this season, won for the third time in their last five games after opening the season with eight straight losses. Sophomore forward Breanna Bolden, who is the Cougars' leading scorer, scored a game-high 17 points in the victory on Tuesday while adding eight rebounds. Meanwhile, senior guard Erin Hall contributed 12 points while junior forward Jackie Luna-Castro added 10 points.
SERIES BUSINESS: Friday's game will mark the 15th all-time meeting between the Seahawks and the Cougars in a series that is tied at 7-7. Charleston won both meetings last year, including an 85-77 triumph in the regular season finale at TD Arena. The Cougars have won four of the seven meetings played inside Trask Coliseum.
HISTORY LESSON: Despite a combined 50 points from sophomore guard Brie Mobley and senior guard Kelva Atkins, the Seahawks were unable to end the regular season on a winning note as UNCW dropped an 85-77 decision against the College of Charleston inside TD Arena. Afreyea Tolbert led four Charleston players in double figures with 16 points and nine rebounds while Alyssa Frye contributed 14 points. Atkins led all players with 29 points while Mobley posted a 21-point effort.
SEAHAWKS TOMORROW: Friday's game will mark the second of two "Seahawks Tomorrow" dates during the 2014-15 season. The UNCW Department of Athletics has invited nearly 1,200 elementary school students to Friday's game. The Seahawks are 6-2 all-time in "Seahawks Tomorrow" games. UNCW also held a "Seahawks Tomorrow" event on Dec. 19 when the Seahawks defeated East Tennessee State by a 61-48 margin.
