Strong Efforts From UNCW Swimming & Diving On Senior Day

WILMINGTON, N.C. – In its final home meet of the season, and celebrating Senior Day, UNCW swam past College of Charleston in both the men's and women's meets while the women also toppled Georgia Southern on Saturday at the Seahawk Natatorium.

The UNCW men topped the Cougars, 168.5-130.5 while the Seahawk women rolled past CofC, 201-96, and edged GSU, 150-147. Liberty won its three meets with a 190-107 win over UNCW, 210-77 against Charleston and 186-101 against GSU.

"I felt we were able to step up today with some great performances and send this group of seniors out on a high note," said UNCW Head Coach Jason Memont. "This group has been a part of a program that has had a lot of success and helped continue its legacy."

Heading up the Seahawk men were multi-event winners Alex Sabau (1000 Free, 500 Free) and Adam Salzman (200 Free, 100 Free). Salzman also swam on the winning 200 Free Relay. Joining him on the relay were Drew Gaertner, Alex Labonge and Ned Tyler. Gaertner also took first in the 50 Free.

Valtteri Halonen added a win in the 200 Backstroke for the Seahawks.

Jenson Engen swept the Backstrokes, winning both the 100 and 200 events. Adding a sweep for the UNCW women was Rachel McCormick in diving. She won both the 1 and 3-meter boards.

Nathan Lane (1-meter) and Giovanni Villanueva (3-meter) gave UNCW a sweep of the diving events on the men's side.

The Seahawks close out their regular season next weekend when they compete in Chapel Hill, N.C. at the Carolina Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 7-8.
