Seahawks Finish Fifth In Both Races at AdidasX-C Challenge

CARY, NORTH CAROLINA – The UNCW men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Friday and each team finished fifth out of eight entries in N.C. State's Adidas X-C Challenge in Cary.
 
The men wound up with 120 points and trailed N.C. State (20), Elon (60), East Carolina (88) and UNC Greensboro (107).
 
Senior Luis Vargas of Elon won the men's 5K race with a time of 14:29 at WakeMed Soccer Park. Junior Will Bunch was UNCW's top finisher, placing 15th in 15:35.
 
UNCW's women, meanwhile, totaled 131 points and finished behind N.C. State (21), Elon (36), East Carolina (95) and UNC Greensboro (123).
 
N.C. State's Joanna Thompson came in first in the women's 5K, clocking a 16:57 time. Freshman Sarah Hamon was the top finisher for the Seahawks with a time of 19:09, good enough for 29th overall out of 65 runners.
 
"Both teams were race rusty today," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's distance coach. "It wasn't too bad for our first race, but we need to make some improvements in the next month. Overall, I'm fairly pleased, but we got a bit of a wake-up call.
 
"The women had a solid day. We still have a few runners that need to grow their confidence. Our top three ran well together.
 
"We have six weeks to make some big strides and put in a lot of hard work between now and the CAA's. The weather is starting to cool off, so the workouts should really start to get stronger."
 
The Seahawks next travel to Leesburg, Va., on Oct. 4 to race in the Mason Invitational.
