Seahawks, Pirates Renew Rivalry On Pitch With Friday Tussle

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Two longtime rivals off to quick starts collide Friday night when the UNCW women's soccer team entertains East Carolina in a non-conference pairing at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks are coming off one of the most explosive weekends in the program's history. UNCW blasted Francis Marion, 8-0, last Saturday in their opening game of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational and then pounded Coastal Carolina, 7-0, Monday night in the tournament finale.

UNCW brings a 5-3-0 record into Friday's 7 p.m. kick-off, while ECU stands 5-2-0. The Pirates lead the all-time series by a 13-6-1 margin, but the two teams have split the last four contests and the Seahawks won last year's installment, 3-2, in Greenville.

"Our programs have played every year since we started and it's a rivalry," said UNCW's 19-year Head Coach Paul Cairney. "We played very close games the last several years, so this is very much like a conference game, and it will be a very tight game."

ECU enjoyed a five-match winning streak before falling to No. 3 Virginia Tech, 3-0, on Sunday. The Pirates feature a stout defense that has resulted in five shutouts and a 12-5 goal differential.

"It's a good test for us…it's like a conference game," added Cairney. "Three points for a winner, nothing for the loser and we're going to attack it that way."

Junior forward Kendall Frey has been the catalyst of ECU's versatile attack. Frey leads ECU in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists. Overall, nine players have scored for the Pirates, who own a perfect 4-0 record on the road this season.

The Seahawks, meanwhile, have been on a roll of their own. With last weekend's outburst, the Seahawks have now outscored opponents, 24-10,  behind junior striker Katrina Guillou, junior midfielder Lindsey Byrne and freshman scorer Serenity Waters.

Guillou, from Ft. Washington, Md., leads the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Byrne, meanwhile, has 10 points on three goals and four assists and Waters, the CAA's Rookie-of-the-Week, has netted eight points on four goals and was named the CAA's Rookie-of-the-Week.

"We still have a couple players out, but some players have stepped in and done a fantastic job. I feel settled in our lineup and our substitution patterns as we head into conference play. I'm confident in who we have at each position."

Admission to the matchup with ECU is $7 for adults and $2 for 15-under. Weather permitting, the game will be carried free on the Seahawk Digital Network. Simply visit UNCWsports.com and click on the Live "Live Events" button on the top right side of the page.

Friday's game serves as a final tune-up for UNCW's Colonial Athletic Association slate, which begins next weekend with a road trip to Delaware and Drexel. The Seahawks take on the Blue Hens on Friday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. before moving over to Philadelphia on Sunday, Sept. 28, to battle the Dragons in a 1 p.m. clash.
