Seahawk Harriers Split Relay Race With Camels

BUIES CREEK, North Carolina – The UNCW men's and women's cross country teams kicked off their seasons late Friday by splitting an early-season relay race on the road against host Campbell.

The UNCW women won the relay against the Camels with eight points after teams finished first, third and fourth overall. Campbell wound up with 13 points. Freshman Sarah Hamon, making her collegiate debut, and sophomore Sarah Goodnight of UNCW combined to win the relay on the women's side with a time of 35:51.

The Seahawk men finished behind the Camels with 18 points after teams came in fifth, sixth and seventh. Campbell took the top three places for a perfect score of six points. Will Bunch and Zach Nifong came in fourth as UNCW's top team with a time of 51:53.

"It was a good outing for us," said UNCW distance coach Layne Schwier. "It was humid and the course was a little rough through the woods. We had good efforts from everyone, though, and it was especially encouraging on the women's side. We don't race for another three weeks, so we have some time to figure some things out."
