Post-Game Notebook: Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic

WILMINGTON, North Carolina
– After hosting a pair of games as part of the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic, UNCWSports.com reviews the Seahawks' performance with the latest post-game notebook.
A Tough Weekend – After suffering their first loss of the season at Appalachian State last Saturday, the Seahawks had hoped that some home cooking would help them get back to their winning ways. Unfortunately, their plans did not go as planned.

UNCW dropped a pair of games as part of the 2014 UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic, falling by a 55-41 margin against North Florida on Friday before a 64-53 decision in the tournament finale on Saturday against Western Carolina.

While Coach Adell Harris was not happy with the pair of losses in the Seahawks' own tournament, she was pleased with the fact the Seahawks were within striking distance in each contest.

"The good thing is that we're in position to win games [with] three minutes left to go," Harris said. "In the last three games, we've been in position. We have to find a way to take the game and step up and be better in the last three minutes, and we will find a way."

Doubled Over – Sophomore guard/forward Naqaiyyah Teague recorded 10 or more rebounds in both of the Seahawks' games this weekend. She tallied a career-high 11 rebounds against North Florida on Friday afternoon before a 10-rebound performance against Western Carolina. Teague leads the Seahawks with 38 rebounds in four games this year.

Welcome Back – Sophomore guard Brie Mobley made her season debut in the Seahawks' two games this weekend. After missing the first three games, she scored four points with two rebounds against North Florida. In Saturday's game against Western Carolina, she tallied a team-high 18 points by making 9 of 17 shots from the floor.

It Had to End Sometime – After scoring 16 points in the loss against North Florida on Friday, senior guard Kelva Atkins was held to just nine points in Saturday's loss against Western Carolina. The nine-point performance snapped a streak of 14 consecutive games where Atkins scored at least 10 points. Atkins leads the Seahawks with a 16.0 scoring average through five games.

Bicentennial – Senior guard Kelva Atkins recorded the 200th assist of her UNCW career in the Seahawks' loss against North Florida and added four more assists against Western Carolina, giving her 204 assists in three seasons. Atkins needs 16 assists to move into 15th place on the Seahawks' all-time list.

Be Our Guest – The Seahawks hosted the first of two in-season tournaments this season with the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic. It is the first time UNCW has hosted an in-season tournament since the 2009-10 season. The Seahawks are now 13-13 (.500) all-time in regular season tournaments after the two losses this weekend.

Halfway There – The Seahawks have led at the intermission in all five of their games this season. They led by 12 points at the intermission against North Florida and had a 35-28 advantage at the break against Western Carolina.

On Second Thought – The Seahawks were limited to just 26 points in the second half of their two games this weekend while making just 11 of 53 (.208) field goal attempts after the intermission. In the loss against North Florida, UNCW scored just eight points, which matched the fewest points in a second half under Coach Adell Harris.

Around the Circuit – Teams in the Colonial Athletic Association have posted a 4-10 (.444) record this weekend through games of Nov. 29. Hofstra and James Madison split a pair of games in tournament action while Towson, Northeastern and Charleston also competed in a tournament.

Through games of Nov. 29, Elon is the lone unbeaten team with a 4-0 record while the defending CAA champion Dukes have a 5-1 record.

The CAA has a 20-7 (.741) home record so far this year in non-conference play.

A Look Ahead – The Seahawks will continue their six-game homestand on Tuesday night when they welcome former Colonial Athletic Association rival VCU at Trask Coliseum. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
