WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Looking to open the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2010-11 season, the UNCW women's basketball team will host Campbell University in a non-conference game at Trask Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
Opening tip-off between the Seahawks and the Camels is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Seahawk Digital Network with Joe Catenacci providing the play-by-play.
Led by senior guard Kelva Atkins (Granville Central H.S./Stem, N.C.) and sophomore guard Amber Reeves (North Cobb H.S./Marietta, Ga.), the Seahawks began the regular season with a commanding 75-38 victory over UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks never trailed in the game and held the Braves to just 22.4 percent shooting from the field.
Atkins, who has scored 10 or more points in seven consecutive games, posted the third "double double" of her UNCW career against UNC Pembroke by scoring 10 points with a game-high 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, Reeves had her first career "double double" after scoring 12 points with a career-high 10 rebounds. Â
Atkins and Reeves were two of five UNCW players to score in double figures against the Braves on Sunday. Senior center Sarah Myatt (Southern Alamance H.S./Burlington, N.C.) contributed 13 points with six rebounds in her UNCW debut while junior guard Shatia Cole (Myrtle Beach H.S./Myrtle Beach, S.C.) led all players with 14 points.
Sophomore guard Naqaiyyah Teague (Malcolm X. Shabazz H.S./Newark, N.J.) added 11 points with six rebounds and four steals for the Seahawks in the victory.
Off to a 2-0 start on the season, the Camels will be playing their first road game of the season on Wednesday night. They opened the season by defeating Pfeiffer by an 89-61 margin before defeating North Carolina Central on Monday night with a 65-60 triumph.
Senior guard Kiera Gaines is the Camels' leading scorer with an 18.0 point per game average while contributing 8.0 rebounds per outing. She has scored 18 points in each of the Camels' two victories this year and also added nine rebounds against North Carolina Central.
Campbell Coach Wanda Watkins is in her 34th season as the Camels' leader, guiding them to a 518-413 record. In last year's meeting against the Seahawks, she earned the 500th win of her career with a 73-60 triumph.
The Camels lead the all-time series by a 31-16 margin, but has lost three of the last four meetings in the series.
