Boseman, Foskey Lead Seahawks At Frosty NCAA SE Regionals

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Junior Dakota Foskey and freshman Alex Boseman were UNCW's top runners as the Seahawks concluded their seasons at the NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships Friday at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.

UNCW's men finished 26 out of 33 teams and the women wound up 32nd out of 38 entries in chilly conditions for the teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky. Temperatures hovered just above freezing and combined with a slight breeze made for a challenging race environment.

Foskey, from Four Oaks, N.C., was the top runner for UNCW's women for the third straight race and paced the squad in three of five outings this fall. She finished 171st overall out of 257 runners with a time of 23:08 over the 6K course.

"Our women ran a similar race to the conference meet," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's distance coach. "Illnesses and nagging injuries kept us from being 100 percent going into the meet.

"Not having a strong frontrunner really hurts in a meet like this. Dakota ran a solid race again, but we need to find a No. 1 if we're going to be more competitive. We beat teams that we should have beaten and didn't beat any that we probably shouldn't. It was pretty much a par day for us."

Boseman, from Raleigh, N.C., was the top finisher for the Seahawk men for the second straight race with a time of 32:33 on the 10K course. He finished 118th out of 231 entries.

"Our men had a solid day," Schwier continued. "Alex is running very well as a freshman. He's shown that he's going to help lead this team for the next several years. Casey (Buddenbaum) ran okay in his final collegiate race and Will (Bunch) gutted out a fourth spot finish despite running with a cast on his right hand.

"It was a tough season for both teams. We had a lot of tough breaks along the way, but they all worked hard this year and I think we have a good future."
