Men's Cross Country

Seahawks Place Fifth, Eighth At CAA Cross Country Championships

CAA Men's Results | CAA Women's Results

BOSTON, Massachusetts –
UNCW finished fifth in the men's race and eighth in the women's competition at the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships early Saturday at historic Franklin Park.

The Seahawks, racing for the fifth time this fall, tackled rainy, cool conditions in the conference meet and didn't find it to their liking.

"The weather conditions were rough," said Distance Coach Layne Schwier. "It was truly cross country weather. It may have had an effect on a couple people, but you can't use that as an excuse. Everyone ran in the same conditions."

In the men's standings, heavy favorite William & Mary placed five runners in the top-10 to win its 15th consecutive conference title with 36 points. Trailing the Tribe was Northeastern (48), Elon (85), Charleston (100), UNCW (128) and Hofstra (147).

Individually, Elon senior Luis Vargas blew away the field with a time of 24:11 over the 8k course to earn Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet recognition. Freshman Alex Boseman was UNCW's top runner for the first time this fall with a 25:50 time, giving him 18th place out of 52 runners.

"We ran solid and Alex had a big day," said Schwier. "He's been solid all season and put it together today. The bottom line is that we were just outmanned today. We just don't have enough firepower to beat some teams. Seniors Casey Buddenbaum and Mike Parsons had solid races in their final CAA meet. We just have to find a solid front runner to get that lower score."

William & Mary also won the women's side to sweep the championships for the third year in a row and win its 20th title overall. The Tribe totaled 35 points, followed by Elon (46), James Madison (84), Northeastern (118), Delaware (121), Charleston (141), Towson (195), UNCW (220) and Hofstra (285).

Junior Carolyn Hennessey of William & Mary, who finished seventh one year ago, captured first place in the women's race this time by clocking a 20:45 over the 6k course for Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet honors. Junior Dakota Foskey was UNCW's top women's finisher for the second straight outing with a time of 23:20 for 44th place out of 89 competitors.

Schwier said, "The women's race was about what we expected, but we had a few off days. We aren't deep enough to be able to overcome someone having a bad day. We are a young team with just one senior and one junior in the lineup."

Senior Rachel Quinn, who has battled injuries throughout the season, turned in a valiant effort. "Rachel got out well, ran strong and hung on. Rachel could have been that front runner all year we were lacking, but she hasn't been 100 percent all season."

The Seahawks wrap up the season in two weeks when they compete in the NCAA Southeast Regionals in Louisville, Ky.
