Seahawk Harriers Finish Third, Fourth At GMU Invitational

LEESBURG, Va. – Freshman Karli Smiraglia and junior Will Bunch were the top finishers for UNCW as the Seahawks competed in the George Mason Invitational Cross Country Race early Saturday on a challenging course at Oatlands Plantation.
 
The Seahawks, competing for the third time this fall, finished third in the five-team women's race and came in fourth in the seven-team men's competition.

"We're coming off a very hard two weeks of training and, as expected, everyone was a bit fatigued," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's distance coach. "We actually want that this time of year. Over the next four weeks, the volume will start to drop and the times will start to really drop. Today was about competing hard and overcoming some mental barriers with the toughness of the course. We won't face a course this tough the rest of the season."
 
Smiraglia, from Laurel, Md., clocked a 24.22 time in the 6K women's race to lead UNCW's nine runners. George Mason won the race with 44 points, followed by George Washington (51), UNCW (63), American (78) and VMI (102).
 
GMU's Bailey Kolonich took the women's race with a time of 23.46, edging teammate Jennifer Nakamura.
 
"Our women ended up about where we hoped," said Schwier. "We don't have a standout frontrunner and will rely on tight packing and hope that pack can keep moving up together in each race.
 
"The women had a solid day. We knew we had a big challenge with the toughness of the course. It was our first 6K of the season. Freshman Karli Smiraglia really stepped up. She wasn't intimidated by the course since she's from Maryland and runs them all the time."
 
On the men's side, VMI came in first with 28 points in front of George Mason (29), George Washington (83), UNCW (102), American (128), Catholic (187) and Southern Maryland (201).
 
Bunch, from Chapel Hill, N.C., was the top runner for the Seahawks with a time of 27:42 over the 8K course, giving him 17th place. GMU's Michael Conway beat out teammate Stuart Crowell for first with a 26:09 finish.
 
"The men had a lot of question marks coming in. It was their first 8K of the season and the first one for several of the guys. We were pretty solid through the first four guys and were curious who would step up and be that critical fifth man today.
 
"It was a great debut for Alex Boseman. Adam Gartrell also came through for us. The men have a long ways to go and have to keep grinding and put it all together in four weeks."
 
The Seahawks are idle next weekend before traveling to the Charleston Invitational in Johns Island, S.C., on Oct. 17.
