Volleyball Preview: at I-85 Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Seahawks return to the road this weekend when they visit USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb, who are co-hosting the I-85 Invitational beginning on Thursday.

UNCW opens the tournament on Thursday with a 6 p.m. start against Alabama State in Spartanburg, South Carolina, followed by a visit to Gardner-Webb on Friday. The three matches in three days run concludes on Saturday against NCAA Division I newcomer West Florida. Links to live coverage can be found here: UNCWSports.com/coverage.

The Seahawks opened their second season under the direction of Head Coach Lo Hoyer last weekend, finishing 2-2. UNCW gained its first season-opening win since 2019 on day one of the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic by sweeping Le Moyne. After falling to a strong Kennesaw State program in four sets, the Seahawks rallied the following day with another sweep coming against the Citadel.

The final match of the weekend saw the Seahawks fall in three sets on Sunday at nationally-ranked North Carolina.

Newcomers Lauren Lewis and Gaby Zovko were named to the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic All-Tournament team for the Seahawks. Kovko compiled a triple-double of 10 kills, 29 assists and 12 digs in the loss to Kennesaw St. It was UNCW's first triple-double since the 2019 season and the fourth of Zovko's collegiate career.

Following the I-85 Invitational, the Seahawks host their second and final in-season tournament next weekend. UNCW hosts UNCA, Norfolk State and Harvard in the UNCW Hampton Inn University Invitational beginning on Sept. 11.
