Volleyhawks "Vanda"-lize Coastal In Four

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sam Vanda's career-high 20 kills powered UNCW to a 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16) non-conference win over visiting Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks, who halted a five-match losing streak in the series, pushed above .500 to 10-9 with the win. The Chanticleers, though, dropped to 6-10.

Vanda eclipsed her previous high of 18 kills, set last week against Hofstra. She added eight digs and a block. Reigning Coastal Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, Elaina Murphy hit .379 on the strength of 14 kills in 29 attacks.

Gaby Zovko doled out 42 assists and finished off a double-double with a career-high-tying 16 digs. Nadia Wasilewski added 11 kills and hit .450, while Courtney Graham chipped in nine kills and four blocks.

Talia Johnson led the Chants with 11 kills, and Natalie Hughes and Anzly Rinard joined her in double figures, both with 10 kills.

In the final set, Coastal built a 10-3 lead before seeing UNCW rally. An 8-1 run that featured four different Seahawks with a kill knotted the game at 11-all. Vanda gave the Seahawks a lead, 13-12, with a kill. UNCW scored nine of the next 10 points to establish a 22-14 lead.

The Seahawks return to Coastal Athletic Association play this Friday at North Carolina A&T, beginning at 6 p.m.
