Carrico Punches Ticket To NCAA Championships

Seahawk men lead their meet and the women are second

HAMPTON, Va. – Junior William Carrico punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships with a record-setting performance in the men's 200 IM on Thursday at the Coastal Athletic Association championships at the Hampton Aquaplex.

UNCW leads the men's meet with 292.5 points while the women are second with 493.

Carrico, who posted several NCAA B cut times during his career, captured the race with a time of 1:42.09, setting conference, conference championship and UNCW program records. His time also lifted him into 12th nationally.

In the women's 200 IM race, Gil Shaw, a senior, touched the wall in a time of 2:00.84 to win gold for the Seahawks.

Senior sprinter Cameron Snowden defended her title in the 50 Free with a time of 22.39 seconds.

Makenna Sharpe paced the Seahawks in the women's 3-meter board with a silver medal, with a score of 284.10 points. She earned bronze as a junior.

The Seahawk women added another gold on the evening with a win in the women's 400 Medley Relay. Maeren McGonigal, Shaw, Snowden and Alex Tysinger topped the field with a time of 3:35.53. The Seahawks were in second place going into Snowden's swim, but the senior wiped out the deficit and handed Tysinger the lead. The freshman held that lead to the end when she touched the wall first.

Remaining medal winners for the Seahawks: 500 Free: Wilson Tuttle, third; 200 IM: Maeren McGonigal, third; 200 IM: Ian Frazer, third; Men's 400 Medley Relay, third.

The third day of the championships begins on Friday with the preliminaries at 9:30 a.m.
