Three Seahawks Capture CAA Gold on Wednesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miles Higgins and Jordyn Robbins won gold medals in the javelin throw, and Bryson Robinson captured the long jump title on a rainy Wednesday at the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Multiple lightning delays affected the schedule of events throughout the first day at Marcus T. Johnson Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

After five complete events, the UNCW men are in third place with 28 points, while the UNCW women's squad is in seventh place with 12 points.

"We flat out competed today," head coach Jeff Klaves said. "There is absolutely no doubt that we left no doubt. Our mission statement all year long has been exactly that. I'm proud of them trusting the work, and we went to work today. Proud of this team."

Early in the morning, Higgins, a junior, claimed his first CAA Javelin Throw Championship, tossing 63.73 meters (209-1) on his first attempt to give the Seahawks their first gold medalist of the day and 10 team points. Higgins entered the competition ranked first in the CAA and 29th in the NCAA East.

With the victory, Higgins became a three-time NCAA qualifier, punching his ticket to the NCAA East First Round in Jacksonville, Florida. Higgins will compete May 28 at 2:30 p.m. He finished 17th last season with a throw of 65.18 meters (213-10).

"Proud of Miles and everything he continues to be and how he competes. We saw some great competitive reps. Now we're on to the NCAA East First Round to try and punch his ticket to the 2025 NCAA Championships."

Robbins, also a junior, captured her second straight CAA javelin throw title on Wednesday afternoon with a throw of 42.73 meters (140-2) on her second attempt. She outlasted Morgan Reiner of Delaware, who threw 42.59 meters (139-8) on her final attempt.

Robbins is on the cusp of becoming a two-time NCAA qualifier. She currently ranks 49th in the NCAA East with a mark of 45.59 meters (149-7). She will find out if she qualified for the NCAA East First Round for the second straight season on May 22. Robbins finished 16th at the event last season with a toss of 46.96 meters (154-1).

"Jordyn is an absolute gamer. Today was a day she had to be resilient and she had to find a way, and she did. Back-to-back CAA champion has a nice ring to it. Now she has her eyes set on some of the other goals she wants to accomplish this year."

Robinson, a junior, repeated as long jump champion on Wednesday night after a battle with his teammate Ivan Poag and Ahmad Brock of Monmouth.

Robinson leaped 7.15 meters (23-5 1/2) on his first attempt to take an early lead. Monmouth's Ahmad Brock matched Robinson's mark on his third attempt and moved into first place by 0.3 m/s, holding a 1.2 to 0.9 m/s edge over Robinson.

Poag was sitting in sixth place after three attempts with a personal best of 6.96 meters (22-10) on his second attempt. Poag leapfrogged Brock and Robinson on his fourth attempt with a new career-best jump of 7.16 meters (23-6) to take the lead.

Robinson retook the lead on his fourth attempt with a jump of 7.25 meters (23-9 1/2). He solidified the victory with a mark of 7.53 meters (24-8 1/2) on his final attempt and punched his ticket to the NCAA East First Round, recording a top 40 jump in the region.

"What a day for Bryson! 10 times out of 10, I'll take this guy to be representing us. He hit his best jump of the season on his sixth and final attempt. Excited that his team was able to share it with him."

UNCW had a successful day on the track as eight Seahawks qualified for Thursday's finals in six different track events.

Senior sprinter Nasiah Ferguson shattered her school record in the women's 400 prelims, running 55 seconds to win her heat. She finished third overall and qualified for the finals on Thursday at 2 p.m. Ferguson set the previous school record of 55.17 seconds at the Raleigh Relays on March 28, 2025.

"Nasiah is fearless. When she's on, what you see is her being among one of the conference and the nation's best in what she does." I'm really proud of her race, qualification and school record. I look forward to day two for Nasiah."

Ella Jane Osada, a freshman, joined Ferguson in the 400 finals, running a career-best 55.93 seconds to finish eighth in the prelims. Osada improved on her sixth-fastest time in program history by sixth hundredths of a second. She also nearly tied Ferguson's program freshman record of 55.92.

In the men's 110-meter hurdles prelims, junior Cameron Wright ran his all-time best of 13.88 seconds to win his heat and finish third overall to qualify for the final on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Wright is also on pace to qualify for the NCAA East First Round, moving into 39th place in the region.

Wright moved from fourth to third on the program's all-time list, passing Zeickia Ledwell's time of 14.01 in 2015. Wright also finished third in the men's 100-meter dash prelims, running 10.51 seconds to qualify for the finals on Thursday at 2:10 p.m.

"Cam represents the way we go about things every single day. Today was a great day for him. This truly goes back to day one and his mindset. Every single day, he comes to practice to work on his craft. He is one of the rising stars of our program, and he's leading by example.

Kai Williams, a senior, joined Wright in the 110 hurdles final, finishing fifth in the prelims with his career-best time of 14.32 seconds, the eighth-fastest performance in school history.

Seniors Cooper Wright and Dalton Zimmerman delivered career-best performances in the men's 400 prelims to punch their ticket to the final on Thursday at 1:50 p.m.

Wright ran 47.77 seconds, his best race of the season, to finish second in his heat and fifth overall. Zimmerman qualified for the final after setting his all-time best of 47.75 to finish third in his heat, resulting in a seventh-place overall finish.

Senior Owen Marish earned a fifth-place finish in the men's 800 prelims, running 1 minute, 52.30 seconds to qualify for the finals on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Chad Hillman, a junior, ran 53.43 seconds to finish fifth in the men's 400 hurdles prelims to qualify for the final on Thursday at 3 p.m.

In addition to the trio of gold medal winners and Poag's silver medal in long jump, freshman Jamisyn Aillet was the fifth Seahawk to score points in a field event. Aillet threw 35.16 meters (115-4) in the women's javelin throw to finish seventh, scoring two points for the Seahawks.

"They left it all on the track and field. I'm really excited about our winners and our advancements and our team in general for their effort, their preparation and executing the plan from top to bottom. This team believes, and that is a great place to be as we continue to take this momentum into day two."

The Seahawks return for day two of the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
