Track & Field Preview: CAA Championships

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With eight in-season meets in the books, the UNCW outdoor track and field teams now set their sights on the big prize – the 2024 Coastal Athletic Association Track & Field Championships set for Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex hosted by Elon.

The Seahawks have set four school records heading into the two-day meet on the campus of Elon. The teams have also registered 41 top-ten all-time performances, 36 event wins and nine school records over the last five months.

"We look forward to competing at the CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week. Our present performance indicates we are improving and ready," said UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "We believe the CAA is one of the best mid-major conferences in the country and it takes a championship mentality and culture to compete. We are prepared and hungry to show the conference the improvements we've made.

UNCW has already competed at Elon this year when the men's and women's squads combined for four top-ten performances and won six events. Sophomore Jesse Helton established a new school record in the Men's Shot put at Elon in late March.

"Back in March we got to attend a home meet hosted by Elon and we've used that as our conference preview, continued Klaves. "We know the layout; we look forward to competing and have high expectations for this year's group."

Other school records that have fallen this year include Nickolis Anderson's mark in the Men's 400 Meters as well as Josh Parks in the 110 Meter Hurdles when both athletes won their events at Duke.

Sophomore Miles Higgins established a new school record in the Men's Javelin to kickstart the outdoor season in early March.

The Women's 4x400 team of Grace Guilford, Janiyah Fields, Nasiah Ferguson and Mackenzie Townsend reset the school benchmark with a 3:45.50 time at the East Coast Relays. It was a double-record meet for Townsend, who individually claimed UNCW's new all-time mark in the Women's 400 Meters.

Fifth-year Courtney Lines will be in search of her fifth straight CAA Women's Long Jump golf medal and third straight outdoor Long Jump.

Klaves added, "Years ago, I would come into this meet saying we were "Small but Elite". Our "No Ceilings" mission statement this year has helped us transcend that into an elite mindset across the board. Look for us to be competitive in every event we are entered in.
