Record-Breaking Performances Highlight Friday's Return To The Leads

HAMPTON, Va. – Highlighted by record-breaking performances by William Carrico and Cameron Snowden, UNCW now leads both Coastal Athletic Association swimming and diving championships meets through Friday at the Hampton Aquaplex.

The men own a 107-point lead over Delaware while the women erased a 12-point deficit and now lead the meet by 98 points also over the Blue Hens.

Snowden gave the Seahawks an immediate lift, winning the women's 100 butterfly with a championship meet and program record time of 52.72 seconds. She had set both records in Friday's preliminaries.

In the women's 400 IM, UNCW swimmers occupied second through fifth place with Lauren Sharp taking second with a time of 4:20.32. She was followed, in order, by Katie Knorr, Kennedy Grotjohn and Brooke Knisely. Karsen Pena gave UNCW a fifth scorer in the finals with a seventh-place showing.

Carrico made a Teal sweep of the 400 IM with his second CAA championship in as many events. The freshman touched the wall in an NCAA B cut time of 3:47.31. Aidan Duffey took silver in the event and Silas Crosby was fourth.

Will Goldey added another event championship for the Seahawks when he clocked in with a time of 46.98 to win the 100 backstroke. Jack Van Howe earned All-CAA honors by finishing third. Robert Tars and Paddy Morris finished fourth and sixth, respectively as UNCW earned 64 points in the event.

Ethan Badrian defended his 3-meter championship, edging teammate Nic Newis, 350.25 to 336.20, to win the gold. Newis earned silver. With the men sweeping both boards, the Seahawks have now swept the diving for the last five championships.

Emily Waite broke her own record in the 200 freestyle when she finished second in the race with a time of 1:47.79.

The men's 200 freestyle relay of Noah Sipowski, Mac Russell, Jacob Duracinsky and Kenneth Lowe closed out the day in style, defending its championship with a time of 1:19.23.

In the preliminaries, Snowden and Carrico rewrote the records book with a pair of NCAA B cut qualifying times. Snowden fashioned a championship meet and school record time of 52.92 in the 100 butterfly and Carrico swam 3:46.64, also a conference, championship meet and program record time, in the 400 IM. Carrico broke a record that has stood since 1994.

The meets conclude on Saturday, beginning with the swimming preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by the diving preliminaries at 12:30 p.m. The finals session kicks off at 6 p.m.
