Men's Golf Wins Gopher Invitational

Three Seahawks finish in the top six of the season opener

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Walker Isley led three Seahawks in the top six of the final standings as UNCW men's golf earned a five-stroke win on Tuesday in its season-opening tournament victory at the Gopher Invitational.

The Seahawks topped runner-up Kent State for the tournament title. Kansas, Marquette, Northwestern, and host Minnesota rounded out the top five atop the standings.

Isley, who posted his 12th career top-10 finish, carded a three-round score of 69-67-70=206 to finish a stroke behind medalist Will King of Kansas. Joining Isley in the top six were teammates Patrick Sparks and Gray Mitchum, who were third and tied for sixth, respectively.

Sparks rose 11 spots and into third on Tuesday on the strength of a four-under-par 67 in the final round. For Sparks, it was his eighth career top-10 finish.

Mitchum, who carded a hole-in-one in the opening round, fashioned his fourth career top-10 finish.

The Seahawks combined for 50 birdies at the tournament, led by Isley's 16.

The tournament win was the 12th for Head Coach Daniel Bowden, who is in his seventh season with the Seahawks at the lead.

Next up for UNCW is the Rod Myers Intercollegiate, hosted by Duke, on Sept. 24-25.
