Diamond Hawks Move Back Into CAA Lead With Series Win

The Seahawks earned another weekend series win with a 4-2 victory Sunday against #25 Northeastern

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Four UNCW pitchers combined to limit nationally-ranked Northeastern to two runs, one earned, as the Seahawks clipped the Huskies, 4-2, on Sunday at Brooks Field to post another Colonial Athletic Association series win.

The Seahawks, who have not dropped a weekend series this season, improved to 27-17 overall and moved back into first place in the CAA standings with a 16-6 record. The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped to 36-9 with the road loss and to 17-7 in the league. With the win, UNCW has clinched a CAA Tournament berth and remains the only school to play in all 37 championship tournaments

Ethan Chenault (3-2) earned the win with three hitless innings of relief after starter Ryan Calvert pitched into the fifth, allowing one run on four hits before turning it over to the bullpen. Luke Craig and Brett Banks, who notched his fifth save, combined to strike out four of the nine batters they faced. UNCW relievers allowed just one hit over the final five innings of work.

Led by Dillon Lifrieri, UNCW had four hitters with multi-hit games. Lifrieri, who drove in two runs on the day, gave the Seahawks a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth when he led off the inning with his ninth home run of the season. Brock Wills, Trevor Marsh and Taber Mongero added two hits apiece.

The Huskies managed just five hits on the game and just one for extra bases, with Spenser Smith double in the fifth off Calvert.
Wyatt Scotti (6-2) took the loss for NU, allowing three runs on eight hits over four innings.

The Seahawks visit nationally-ranked Campbell on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start before heading to the College of Charleston for a CAA series at Patriots Point.

How it happened: UNCW was able to jump on Scotti in the second inning for a pair of runs to take the lead, 2-0. Mac Gillespie opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch and would score two batters later on a double play turned by NU. The second run came across with two outs on a Lifrieri infield single, plating Mongero, who began the two-out rally with a single.

Home Runs: UNCW: Lifrieri (9, off Scotti in the fifth inning to left field, 356 feet, 104 exit velocity)
