Parks Medals Twice In CAA Meet Finale

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – UNCW workhorse Josh Parks reached the podium twice, defending his title in the Men's 400 Meter Hurdles and claiming silver in the Men's 110 Meter Hurdles, as the curtain closed on the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships on Saturday at William & Mary's Walter J. Zable Stadium.

The Seahawks finished in fifth place with 84.5 points in the final men's standings. Northeastern rode four event wins on the final day to its record-setting eighth consecutive crown.

UNCW took ninth place with 30.5 points on the women's side. Elon used strong performances across multiple events to win the women's title for the third year in a row with 185 points, beating out CAA newcomer Hampton. Elon is the first team to capture three straight titles since 2010.

Overall, the Seahawks collected four medals on the final day, posted four top-10 all-time finishes and set two school records in the meet finale.

Parks, who advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary Round one year ago, will be making a return trip after setting a school record with his time of 50.48 in the 400 Meter Hurdles. It was the second-fastest time in CAA meet history. Finishing second in 51.03 was Northeastern's Cory Gaither, Jr. and third place went to Monmouth's Jordan Ricketts with a time of 52.93.

Parks is ranked 13th in the 400 Hurdles and 22nd in the 110 Hurdles in the NCAA East Region.

Junior Nickolis Anderson set the team's other school record on Saturday, racing to third place in the Men's 400 Meters in 46.27. He ranks 23rd in the NCAA East Region.

Freshman thrower Jesse Helton started the day with a bang. He set a freshman record and moved into No. 3 all-time with his throw of 52-10.25 in the Men's Shot Put.

In addition, the Women's 4x100 Relay squad of Janiyah Fields, Brynn Sheffield, Amanda Ruffin and Courtney Lines clocked a 46.00 time, climbing into No. 2 all-time.

It was the final conference meet for Seahawk seniors Kendall Hobbs, Maddie Knorr, Brynn Sheffield, Gretchen Bingham and Taylen West.

Fourth-year head coach Jeff Klaves said: "I want to thank these five seniors for everything they've done for the program. They are leaving a legacy of defined resiliency, perseverance and hard work. From day one, they have grown each year and helped to build a strong culture. I couldn't be more proud of these five student-athletes for proving to everyone what we could build at UNCW."

The Seahawks will compete in the Mount Olive Last Chance Meet next weekend, May 13-14, at the Ray McDonald, Sr., Sports Complex in Mount Olive, N.C.
