Diamondhawks Win Seventh CAA Championship

UNCW heads to the NCAA Regionals for 11th time

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – UNCW held off a furious late-game rally by Northeastern to claim its seventh Colonial Athletic Association title with a 5-4 win on Sunday at Patriot Point.

The Seahawks enter the NCAA Regionals with a 34-21 mark while the Huskies dipped to 44-14. The seventh title ties the conference record set by East Carolina.

UNCW belted three home runs on the night in jumping out to an early lead. Dillon Lifrieri, who was named tournament Most Outstanding Player, and Tanner Thach slammed back-to-back homers in the first and Jac Croom added his seventh roundtripper of the season in the sixth. Croom finished with three hits, while Alec DeMartino and Lifrieri chipped in two hits apiece.

Junior reliever Ethan Chenault (5-2) earned the win with four innings of one-run relief. Brett Banks pitched out of a bases-loaded situation in the eighth and notched his eighth save of the season.

Mike Sirota of Northeastern collected three hits, including his 18th homer of the season. Sirota's three-run shot to right in the ninth cut UNCW's lead to 5-4. Alex Lane and Cam Maldonado had two hits each.

Jack Beauschesne (1-1) took the loss for the Huskies.

Joining Lifrieri on the All-Tournament team were Croom, Banks, Jacob Shafer and Zane Taylor.

The Seahawks learn their destination for the NCAA Regionals on Monday at noon on ESPN2.

How it happened: The Seahawks struck in the first inning for three runs with home runs off the bats of Lifrieri and Thach supplying the thunder. UNCW pushed that lead to 5-0 on Croom's two-run homer to right center in the sixth inning.

Notes: The Seahawk pitching staff dominated during the tournament posting a 2.25 ERA and limiting opponents to a .219 batting average … Zane Taylor started two games and combined for 7.2 innings, a 2.00 ERA … UNCW has appeared in seven of the last eight championship games … Head Coach Randy Hood earned his first conference tournament championship in his fourth season at the helm … Lifrieri is the sixth Seahawk to be named Tournament MOP.
