UNCW Advances To CAA Championship Game

The Seahawks overcame a 4-0 deficit for a 6-5 win in extra innings

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – UNCW advanced to the championship game of the Colonial Athletic Association with a 6-5 win over Northeastern in extra innings when Jac Croom scored from second base on a dropped pop-up with two outs in the bottom of the 10th on Saturday.

The Seahawks (33-21) will play the winner of Northeastern (43-13) and Elon on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Patriots Point. For the Seahawks, it will be their 12th appearance in the championship game and the seventh time in the last eight tournaments.

In the 10th inning, Croom drew a one-out walk and then stole second base to get into scoring position. An intentional walk to John Newton put two runners on base. Northeastern reliever Griffin Young got the second out to bring Kevin Pitarra to the plate. On a 1-1 pitch, Pitarra popped the ball up where it was dropped in front of the plate, allowing Croom to score from second with the winning run.

Reliever Brett Banks (1-3) earned the win with a 1-2-3 top of the inning. Young, meanwhile, was tagged with the loss to dip to 3-3.

Pitarra held game-high honors with three hits, tying his career-high. Dillon Lifrieri added two hits while Trevor Marsh doubled in the tying runs in a five-run sixth inning. Croom scored twice and knocked in a run in the sixth inning as UNCW grabbed a 5-4 lead.

Cam Maldonado and Harrison Feinberg had two hits apiece for the Huskies, who built a 3-0 lead through four innings before the game was suspended because of rain.

Notes: The Seahawks sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead … UNCW improved to 3-1 against the Huskies this season … UNCW has won six CAA tournament titles and look to tie former CAA rival East Carolina's record of seven … Ryan Calvert took over on the mound when the game was resumed and allowed two hits and an unearned run over three innings … NU's Feinberg homered with one out in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 5-all … For UNCW Head Coach Randy Hood, this will be his second conference championship appearance in three tournaments.
