UNCW Blanks Blue Hens To Advance

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Jacob Shafer and two relievers combined on a seven-hit shutout of Delaware as UNCW advanced in the winner's bracket with a 3-0 win at the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Thursday at Patriots Point.

The top-seeded Seahawks ran their record to 32-21 with their third shutout of the season while the Blue Hens dropped to 30-28 and will play an elimination game Friday.

Leading 1-0, in the sixth, Luke Craig entered the game for UNCW and rolled a double play ball and a ground ball out to end the inning and keep Delaware off the board.

Shafer (7-4) earned the win after scattering four hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out one while recording nine groundball outs. Craig followed with three innings of two-hit relief and Brett Banks notched his seventh save of the season, pitching the ninth.

Brock Wills had two hits for UNCW at the top of the lineup while Trevor Marsh doubled in a run and Dillon Lifrieri and Bryan Arendt added sacrifice flies.

UD's Nate Rolka (2-5) matched Shafer with four shutout innings to open the game, but the Seahawks pushed a run across in the fifth to take the lead.

Joey Loynd had two hits for the Blue Hens.

The Seahawks will play either Elon or Northeastern on Friday at 4 p.m.

How it happened: UNCW broke the ice in the fifth on a sac fly by Lifrieri that scored Taber Mongero. With one out, Mongero drew a walk and moved around to third on a single by Wills. Lifrieri followed with a fly ball to right center and Mongero scored ahead of the throw home.
In the sixth, Marsh doubled to the wall in left to score Alec DeMartino, who opened the inning with a four-pitch walk, to make it 2-0. John Newton, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning moved to third on the double and scored one batter later on a fly ball to Arendt for a 3-0 lead.

Notes: UNCW's other shutouts this season were against Navy (Feb. 18) and William & Mary (May 20) … In four games against UD, the Seahawks have posted a 2.00 earned run average and a .216 batting average … Marsh, whose double extended his hitting streak to seven games, had the only hit with a runner in scoring position on the day … UD was 0-for-6 with RISP … UNCW moved to 8-4 against Delaware in the CAA tournament … Wills has reached base in 17 consecutive games and Lifrieri 12 … Wills also has 20 multiple-hit games this season.
