UNCW Wins CAA Regular Season Title With Sweep

The Seahawks swept William & Mary, 6-0 and 6-3, on Saturday

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Needing to win both ends of a doubleheader to earn the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship, UNCW rolled past William & Mary, 6-0 and 6-3, on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (31-21, 20-8) claimed their 10th CAA regular season title with the sweep and enter next week's conference championship tournament as the top seed. The Tribe, which also clinched a tournament berth this weekend, saw their record move to 32-23 and 15-15.

Connor Kane (4-1), a freshman, picked up the win in the clincher, allowing four hits and no runs over a career-long 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out five in his first start in conference play.

UNCW raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second game as Brock Wills homered on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Jac Croom added an RBI ground out and Trevor Marsh, who collected three hits in the game, singled in the final run of the inning.

The Seahawks pushed that lead to 6-0 with two more runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth.

The Tribe cut its deficit in half with three runs in the top of the eighth with two runs scoring on an RBI single by Noah Zertuche, who finished with two hits.

In the opener, sophomore Zane Taylor (7-2) tossed a shutout to give UNCW a lift. Taylor scattered four hits, walked one and struck out five in posting his first complete game of this career.

Wills, who finished with four hits on the afternoon, scored twice and had two hits in the opener as UNCW broke open a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning with four runs. Dillon Lifrieri, Taber Mongero and Croom added two hits apiece. Monger drove in two runs and so did Tanner Thach.

Tom Mayer (2-3) took the loss in game one and starter Cory Wall (4-4) was saddled with the loss in the second game.

Home Runs: UNCW – Wills (3, off Wall in the first inning to right field, 396 feet, 103 exit velocity

Notes: On the day, UNCW pitching held the Tribe to one hit with runners in scoring position … UNCW hit .385 on the series against the Tribe pitching staff, which entered the series ranked nine nationally in ERA … Marsh finished the series 7-11 with three runs batted in and four scored … Thach drove in six runs on the series … The Seahawks held W&M to five runs over the final 19 innings of the series … Taylor lowered his ERA in conference play to 2.26.
