Seahawks Head To Black Student-Athlete Summit

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW men's basketball players Maleeck Harden-Hayes and Khamari McGriff are set to attend the 10th annual Black Student-Athlete Summit Sunday through Wednesday (May 21-24, 2023) in Los Angeles.

The event is designed to bring student-athletes from around the country together to gather information, learn new skills and network with other participants. The duo will be accompanied by Maggie Tabone, an academic coordinator with UNCW Athletics.

This year's session will be hosted by Southern Cal, with guest speakers such as former NBA player Matt Barnes, NBA Diversity officer Lesley Slaton Brown and actor Solomon Hughes.

"Participating in the BSAS will allow me to better support black student-athletes to allow them to grow as an athlete and student and be better prepared for what comes next after university," said Tabone, who provides academic support for the women's basketball, men's soccer, men's and women's cross country and men's and women's track and field teams and also oversees the office's tutor program.

Harden-Hayes, a 6-7 senior guard from Moorhead, Minn., started 19 of the team's 34 games this past season, averaging 9.8 points and 4.2 rebounds. He is majoring in Communication Studies.

Khamari McGriff, a 6-8 redshirt freshman from Tallahassee, Fla., played in 18 games for the Seahawks, who went 24-10 and advanced to the championship game of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the second straight year.

The BSAS, organized in 2013, welcomes hundreds of students from universities all over the country each year. More than 165 schools are registered and will send student-athletes as well as members of their staff. The three-day event will feature a variety of activities and events such as forums, table talks and a "Pro-Day."

The sessions will allow participants to share their knowledge and experiences with each other and learn new skills to navigate their way through their university athletic experience. Student-athletes will also have a chance to meet with different employers during a career combine, with hopes of discovering potential internship and employment opportunities after they complete their education.
