UNCW Overcomes 8-Run Deficit To Knock Off Tribe, 16-13

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trailing 11-3 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, UNCW responded with six runs in the inning and five more in the seventh to rally past William & Mary, 16-13, in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association series on Thursday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks remained in first place with the win at 18-8 and improved to 29-21 on the season. The Tribe, meanwhile, dropped to 32-21 overall and 15-13 in the conference and holds the sixth and final tournament berth.

Northeastern stayed on UNCW's heels with a 9-2 win over visiting Charleston. Third-place Elon, which was idle Thursday, opens its series at Hofstra with a doubleheader on Friday. Delaware moved to within a game of third-place CofC with a 14-8 win at Monmouth.

Tanner Thach, Trevor Marsh and Taber Mongero had three hits apiece and each drove in at least two runs. Dillon Lifrieri and Brock Wills recorded three RBI's apiece. Mongero held game-high honors, scoring a career-high four runs while Marsh scored three times.

Reliever Ethan Chenault (4-2) earned the win while Brett Banks nailed down his sixth save of the season.

W&M also had three players with three hits including Ben Williamson, Joe Delossantos and Luca Danos. Both Williamson and Delossantos drove in three runs while Delossantos connected on his eighth home run of the season.

Mike Weidinger (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 0.1 innings.

The series continues Friday with a 6 p.m. start.

How it happened: The sixth inning saw UNCW send 12 hitters to the plate while six of them scored runs to narrow the deficit to 11-9. Alec DeMartino, who had two hits, started the rally with a single and Jac Croom followed with a single of his own. Bryan Arendt was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Marsh, who singled to left to score the first two runs. Mongero drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and Wills pushed another across with a ground ball out. Lifrieri followed Wills with a two-out RBI single to make it 11-9. Ten batters made their way to the plate in the go-ahead seventh for the Seahawks. Jayson Arendt delivered a two-run single to make it a 12-11 deficit and Lifrieri tied with a ground ball out to second. Thatch gave UNCW a 14-12 lead with a two-run single through a drawn-in infield.

Notes: The eight-run deficit was the largest overcome this season for UNCW … UNCW scored all nine baserunners from third with less than two out on the night … UNCW also advanced 23 baserunners in 32 opportunities … Over the final four innings, the Seahawk bullpen allowed four hits, two runs and struck out six.
