Top-Ranked Demon Deacons Blank UNCW, 4-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Reed Mascolo and five relievers combined to post top-ranked Wake Forest's ninth shutout of the season as the Demon Deacons topped UNCW, 4-0, in college baseball action Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Demon Deacons pushed their record to 43-8 while the Seahawks dropped to 28-21.

Mascolo (7-1) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out five over his five-inning start. The bullpen held UNCW to just two hits over the final four innings.

Bennett Lee paced the WFU lineup with two hits and an RBI while Brock Wilken slammed his 24th home run of the season in the sixth inning.

Trevor Marsh finished with two doubles for the Seahawks.

Starter Matt Gaither (3-2) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits in two innings of work.

UNCW closes out the regular season with three home games against Colonial Athletic Association rival William & Mary. The series opens Thursday with a 6 p.m. start.

How it happened: Danny Corona opened the second inning with a single and stole second one batter later. Lee followed with an RBI single up the middle for the first run of the game. Wilken's homer came in the sixth and gave WFU a 3-0 lead.

Home Runs: WFU: Wilken (24, off Stroup in the sixth inning to left, 368 feet, 110 exit velocity.

Notes: The Demon Deacons swept the home-and-home series … UNCW used eight pitchers on the evening … The attendance of 2,291 was the second highest of the season at Brooks Field and the third over 2,000 for the season.
