Diamond Hawks Even Series At Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Trevor Marsh collected a career-high four hits, including a home run, and Zane Taylor continued his stellar pitching as UNCW evened its Colonial Athletic Association series at Charleston with a 9-3 win on Saturday at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks, who have yet to lose back-to-back games in conference play, pushed their record to 28-19 overall and 17-7 in the CAA. With Northeastern falling at William & Mary, 8-5, on Saturday, the Seahawks moved back ahead of the Huskies for first place.

Marsh led a 16-hit attack for the Seahawks as four others finished with multi-hit games. Brock Wills, Dillon Lifrieri and Kevin Pitarra had three hits apiece and Jac Croom added a pair of hits. Pitarra held game-high honors with three runs batted in, tying his career high. Marsh finished a double shy of the cycle, scored three runs and drove in two. Lifrieri and Tanner Thach both posted a pair of RBI's.

Taylor earned his second straight win to move to 6-2. The sophomore pitched into the seventh inning, allowing a run on four hits, walking three and striking out four. For Taylor, it was his third win in his last four starts.

Cole Mathis paced the Cougars with a three-hit afternoon, but no one else had a multi-hit game. Mathis and Trotter Harlan knocked in runs.

Trey Pooser dropped to 6-2 in taking the loss for Charleston.

The series wraps up with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

How it happened: UNCW built a 3-1 lead after four innings on a pair of sac flies from Tanner Thach and Marsh's homer to right in the fourth. UNCW put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth, fueled by two-out RBI singles from Pitarra and Lifrieri for a 6-1 lead.

Home Runs: UNCW: Marsh (10, off Pooser in the fourth inning to right, 427 feet, 109 exit velocity)

Notes: Marsh's home run in the fourth was the third farthest homer of the season for UNCW (427 feet) … UNCW moved to 7-2 in game two of CAA series … The all-time series is tied at 21-all following today's decision … Taylor has allowed just one earned run over his last two starts, totaling 12.2 innings … With a homer on Saturday, the Seahawks have 63 on the season, ranking eight on UNCW's single-season charts … Each team won a replay challenge.
