UNCW Claims Eighth CAA Men's Golf Title

DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – UNCW claimed its eighth Colonial Athletic Association men's golf championship on Tuesday while junior Patrick Sparks earned his first conference medalist honor at the Morgan River/Cotton Dike Course.

The Seahawks topped runner-up Elon by nine strokes. The Phoenix played the final round at 10-under-par and moved to within three strokes several times. UNCW, though, collected nine birdies over the final six holes to keep Elon at arm's length. Junior Sander Akeren keyed that late surge by the Seahawks with four birdies of his own. He notched birdies on the 13, 14, 17 and 18th holes.

Sparks, who set a program CAA tournament record with his final score of 205, became UNCW's sixth individual champion and the first since Segundo Oliva Pinto in 2019. He posted a tournament-high 16 birdies and played par 4's at eight-under.

Elon's Drue Nicholas finished second, four-stroke off the pace.

Walker Isley finished tied for third after climbing three spots in the standings in the final round. Isley matched Elon's Matt Doyle at four-under-par.

Freshman Rune Bokeid finished seventh in his CAA Championship debut. Bokeid finished one under for the tournament.

The Seahawks also set a program record with a final stroke total of 849, best the previous mark of 854, set in 2017.

UNCW, which will be making its 11th NCAA Regional appearance as a team, will learn its destination when the field is announced Wednesday, May 3 at 1 p.m. on GOLF Channel.
