Seahawk Pitching Shuts Down Blue Hens, 2-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Zane Taylor allowed one run over six innings of work and UNCW scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to edge Delaware, 2-1, on Saturday at Brooks Field and clinch another series win.

UNCW (23-14, 12-4 CAA) remained in first place in the Colonial Athletic Association with the home win. The Blue Hens, meanwhile, saw their record drop to 20-19 and 9-8 in the circuit.

Taylor (4-2) scattered three hits over his six innings of work, walked one a struck out two before turning things over to the bullpen. Brett Banks retired all three hitters he faced in the ninth to notch his fourth save of the season.

Jac Croom and Kevin Pitarra collected two hits apiece for the Seahawks while Tanner Thach and Brock Wills drove in the runs with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a ground ball out in the fifth, respectively.

UD starter Joey Silan (1-1) was the hard-luck loser. Silan allowed two runs over a season-high seven innings. He walked three and fanned three.

Joey Loynd had two of UD's six hits and Tyler Leach hit his sixth homer of the season and second of the series.

The series wraps up on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.

How it happened: UNCW scored all the runs it would need in the fourth and fifth innings. Dillon Lifrieri tripled to lead off the fourth and scored one batter later on Thach's sacrifice fly to the wall in right. In the fifth, Trevor Marsh drew a lead-off walk and moved into scoring position on a bunt single by Pitarra. Taber Mongero moved both runners up and Wills hit a ground ball up the middle to the shortstop to score Marsh and give UNCW the lead.

Home Runs: Delaware: Leach (6, off Taylor in the third inning to LF, 391 feet, 109 exit velocity)

Notes: UNCW is now 5-0-1 in conference series with the tie coming at Elon … Taylor snapped a streak of three starts without a win … The time of game was 2:01, the quickest nine-inning game of the season and fastest since 2014 when Mat Batts beat Delaware, 5-1, in a game that lasted 1:58 … He also beat Northeastern in a time of 1:54 that same season … UNCW honored and recognized the 2003 NCAA Regional team before the game.
