Diamond Hawks Sweep Blue Hens With 12-4 Win

UNCW maintains lead in CAA Standings

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW outscored Delaware 12-1 over the final six innings as the Seahawks closed out a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep of the Blue Hens with a 12-4 win on Sunday at Brooks Field.

UNCW (24-14) remained in first place in the conference standings at 13-4 with the win. Delaware, meanwhile, dropped to .500 on the season at 20-20 and 9-9 in the conference.

Home runs off the bats of Bryan Arendt, Dillon Lifrieri and John Newton powered the Seahawks, who fashioned their 15th multi-home run game of the season. Arendt's third of the season was a two-run shot in the sixth that tied the game at 3-all. Lifrieri followed later in the inning with his eighth roundtripper of the season, also a two-run shot, that gave the Seahawks a 5-3 lead. Newton added his eighth homer of the season leading off the seventh inning for a 6-4 lead.

Trevor Marsh held game-high honors with three hits and three runs batted in. Lifrieri and Newton also had two hits apiece.

Cole Benton (1-0) was credited with the win in relief. He entered the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and ended the Blue Hen threat with a strikeout.

Ethan Chenault earned his third season of the season.

The UNCW bullpen combined to allow two runs on five hits over the final 7.1 innings. Aubrey Smith led that charge with 2.2 innings of shutout baseball.

JJ Freeman and Josearmando Diaz both had two hits for the Blue Hens, who built a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first through third innings. Joey Loynd added two hits and knocked in a run.

Eli Atiya (3-4) took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits in two innings of relief.

Starter Nate Rolka scattered two hits over four innings for UD.

The Seahawks visit nationally-ranked North Carolina on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.

How it happened: UNCW got on the board in the fifth on a fielding error and trailed 3-1 going into the sixth inning. Marsh got the inning started when he beat out a ground ball to first. Arendt followed with a homer to left on a 1-2 offering by Atiya to tie things up. One batter later, Taber Mongero reached safely and advanced into scoring position on a throwing error. He moved around to third on a ground ball out and Lifrieri sent a deep fly ball to left center over the wall to give UNCW a 5-3 lead.

Home Runs: UNCW: Arendt (3, off Atiya in the sixth inning to LF, 388 feet, 103 exit velocity), Lifrieri (8, off Atiya in the sixth inning to LC, 388 feet, 101 exit velocity), Newton (8, off Margolis in the seventh inning to LF, 362 feet, 96 exit velocity)

Notes: Delaware came into the series averaging nearly eight runs a game and totaled just eight for the three games … The UNCW bullpen combined for a 1.38 ERA, allowing just two runs over 13 innings … UD hit just .182 against the bullpen … Led by Jac Croom (.462), the Seahawks outhit the Blue Hens, 295-215 for the series … Newton finished the series hitting .417 with two home runs … The Seahawks drew 16 walks over three games … Croom extended his hitting streak to five games with a hit in the seventh … UNCW leads the all-time series, 44-26, including a 24-14 mark at Brooks Field … Before the game, UNCW recognized its 2013 NCAA Regional team to conclude Alumni Weekend festivities.
