UNCW Races Past #23 Frogs For 14-6 Win

FT. WORTH, Texas – Led by Tanner Thach, who knocked in five runs, three Seahawks collected three hits apiece as UNCW knocked off #23 TCU, 14-6, in the opening game of a non-conference series on Friday at Lupton Stadium.

The Seahawks upped their record to 20-12 on the season and 9-4 on the road. The Horned Frogs, meanwhile, slipped to 21-13 with the home loss.

Thach knocked in five runs for the third time this season, missing the cycle by a triple. He homered in the first inning, singled in two runs in the fifth and added a two-run double in a seven-run eighth inning.

Taber Mongero added three hits of his own and drove in three runs. He had a two-run double in that eighth inning outburst.

Jac Croom had three hits and scored twice. The top five hitters in the UNCW lineup combined for 12 hits, scored nine runs and had nine runs batted in.

Ethan Chenault (2-2) earned the win in relief. The righthander entered the game in the fifth inning with two runners on and closed out the inning to preserve a 6-3 Seahawk lead. Chenault finished with 2.2 innings of hitless, shutout relief.

Cole Fontenelle and Karson Bowen paced the TCU lineup with two hits apiece. Tre Richardson drove in two runs.

Ryan Vanderhei (3-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs over 4.1 innings.

The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m. CST.

How it happened: Trailing 4-2 going into the top of the fifth, UNCW exploded for four runs in the fifth to grab a 6-3 lead. Bryan Arendt got things going by getting hit with a pitch leading off the inning and Mongero singled one batter later. Brock Wills, who finished with two hits, walked to load the bases. Dillon Lifrieri plated the first run with a ground ball to third and Thach followed with a two-run single off reliever Sam Stoutenborough to make it 5-4. Alec DeMartino concluded the scoring when he beat out a potential double play ball that scored the fourth run.

Home Runs: UNCW: Thach (10, off Vanderhei in the first to CF, 402 feet, 109 exit velocity), Newton (6, off Ridings in the eighth to LF, 362 feet, 97 exit velocity)

Notes: UNCW now leads the brief series, 3-2 … The Seahawks improved to 7-6 this season against top-100 RPI teams and 3-3 against ranked opponents … Thach now has 43 RBI's on the season and is seven away from tying Matt Sutton's freshman record of 50 set in 2003 … He also needs two home runs to tie Sutton's rookie record of 12 … UNCW outscored the Frogs, 12-2 over the final six innings … John Newton's sixth home run of the season came in the eighth inning and gave UNCW 46 on the season.
